Once players progress past level 55, the progression system begins to radically change. Instead of having to go back into the menu and manually prestige to reset your standard unlock progress, Cold War will automatically rank you up in-game, and you keep everything you previously unlocked on your way to prestige. Keeping your regular unlocks once you hit prestige is a welcomed change from having to hit a hard-reset button every time you wanted to progress further in multiplayer.

Hitting first prestige will grant you a "prestige key:" an item that allows players to unlock legacy emblems and calling cards from previous CoD titles. While the keys are purely a cosmetic reward, it's great to see the history of the previous Call of Duty games preserved one way or another.

On top of prestige keys, players are given a free tier skip on the currently active battle pass, as well as a new equipable sticker for guns and an emblem for your player ID tag, and new challenges. From the initial first prestige, every 50 levels grant an additional prestige to the player and unlocking all the previously mentioned rewards for hitting said level until the seasonal cap and a special weapon blueprint. Black Ops Cold War will only unlock new sets of prestige with every season, with up to prestige 3 available through the initial pre-season, and four additional prestige ranks becoming available during season 1, and four more unlocking every season throughout the game's lifecycle.
