Why does sandra laing look black

If you extrapolate this out to loci you see that a full expected range may emerge. But the Sandra Laing case is different. As judging by the pictures both parents are obviously white. But two individuals who look white? First, it is important to remember that Afrikaners are an old settler population, most of their ancestors arrived in South Africa in the 18th century or earlier. Historically there are plenty of genealogical data which suggest an absorption of mixed-race individuals into the Afrikaner population, of Khoisan, Indian or Malay background usually on the maternal lineage.

This is a small fraction, but not trivial. After all, look at their pictures. I suspect this is plausible because there was admixture as late as the 19th century, as opposed to 2, years ago as for the Uyghurs. But, I have noted that the arrow of dominance seems to mildly point to light skin being dominant over dark. The nose and lips could be European but the skin is evidence of a liaison between a settler and native, perhaps as early as the 18th century.

Mostly I try just to forget the past. Earlier she did smile, when 10 children with violins trooped into her shop, a converted front room of her house, and gave a concert to celebrate the new home and business which, it is hoped, will harbour a normal, stable life.

Wellwishers and dignitaries of all colours made speeches to honour what they called a survivor, a symbol of triumph over despair. A performance by Zulu dancers drove the dog wild and Sandra even joined in the laughter. The wheel has turned full circle. Growing up in the rural town of Piet Retief, Sandra's parents, members of the racist Nationalist Party, also ran a grocery shop, and in the early years she was happy. Treated as white by her parents and two brothers, Adriaan and Leon, she attended the Dutch Reformed Church and was reared as a God-fearing Afrikaner superior to blacks and "coloureds", those of mixed race.

Teachers looked away when classmates called her a "kaffir" and one day, after five years at the Deborah Retief boarding school, the principal told her to pack her bag; she was being expelled. Two policemen escorted the year-old home. Sandra's father wept and tried to explain to her about the laws which said she would have to attend a school for black or coloured children. Sandra Laing: Tony Fabian the director of the film phoned me in that he wanted to meet me and told me that he wanted to make a film about my life.

He did but it took 7 years to make the film. And then the time when I found her in the old age home. SL: I wanted to let the world know what apartheid did to a person in S. Africa and to let people know that if something happens to you long ago and you are scared to talk you must talk about it and let it out and you can then go on with your life.

Have you forgiven your family? SL: Yes, I have forgiven my family. They are still angry with me from when I left home and when I chose black people over them. What can your experience teach people about racial issues? We are all the same. We all have the same blood. A person who marries a partner with negligible to no non-white ancestry cannot produce a throwback.

But if both have enough non-white ancestry on both sides, for meiosis to take place, a throw back is possible! This is the case with Sandra Laing's parents. Nonetheless, the Laing case not only demonstrates that Afrikaners aren't pure, it also demonstrates that some Afrikaners have above negligible levels of non-white ancestry.

And who knows, Arthur Kemp may be one of them! Both Sandra Laing's parents, state that on both sides of the family as far back as their great-grandparents, their family has been white. That still does not rule out the possibility that one of the great-grandparents or some RECENT ancestor was "passing", and that a whole bunch of individuals with significant admixture, just happen to enter the genepool!

In Algeria where black admixture is very significant, an Algerian once said in one family you can get siblings by the same two parents both showing completely Caucasoid features in which a child is born with full-blown mixed Negroid features, while another sibling by the same two parents will be European looking and fair-skinned, whle still another sibling still by the same two parents is born with regular Berber features.

He says since Mulatto types are considered a part of the "basic stock", such variation in a single family is considered "normal" and suprises nobody! The Afrikaners on the other hand, have NOT allowed mixed traits to be a part of their basic stock even though they have high levels of non-white ancestry by European standards , which is why when the rare throw back occurs, they are taken by suprise! To a North African, there would be no suprise.
