I had downloaded a It worked and then I slowly went up through the next nvidia driver up to I had already done what Greybear had suggested to no avail. At the recommendation on a thread in a Dell forum, I turned off my device, booted up holding F12 to enter a BIOS screen so that I could do the next step without being mean to Windows, unplugged the device from power, and then held down the power button until 1.

So it seems like the system is somehow able to set some flag which is, like, supposed to protect it from a malfunctioning graphics card and disable it at close to the hardware level…? And the only way to get it back is to reset the system which resets some of those flags.

There are other things on the XPS which recover after a proper full power cycle such as the touchpad. But pretty much just keep updating windows At least that's what worked for me. Make sure what you have downloaded is specifically for Windows 8. What format is the download in? I am having a similar issue but I have an alienware laptop. Ever since I updated to windows 8 I have had issues with it. Any time I restart it the screen is huge, I go under device manager and and it has a yellow sign under "other devices"VGA videocard" or unknown. I clicked on update driver on the VGA video card and scanned devices on the computer and used the Intel Family chip, I found a place online that suggested it, and after it is done the screen size goes back to normal.

Until something happens and it needs to be restarted again, then I have to go through it all over again. Sometimes is doesn't work and windows won't come up, the screen is either black or has a bunch of lines on it.
